Packing Tips
- Pack one room at a time, labeling each box with a description of its
contents and its destination (e.g., kitchen, bathroom). Be as specific
as you can, it will make unpacking that much easier.
- Keep the weight of your boxes reasonable. If possible, put heavy items
in small boxes to make them easier to carry.
- Don't apply tape directly to polished or painted wood
finishes.Removing the tape could ruin the surface.
- Double-box fragile items and add plenty of cushioning.
- You should never let the movers pack your jewelry, family heirlooms,
or other priceless items. Should they be lost or damaged, the
insurable value will not come anywhere near the value you would place
on them. Such items include jewelry, sports memorabilia, photo albums,
and various hobby collections. Pack these items yourself and take them
with you, either in the car or as carry-on luggage if size allows.
- Pack books tightly on end in small boxes. If musty smelling, sprinkle
talcum powder between the pages and wrap the book before packing.
Leave stored for a couple of months to eliminate the smell.
- Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in
wrappings for the move.
- Pack medicines in a leak proof container.
- Carry all valuables with you.
- Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly. Purchase
special boxes for dishes, wardrobe and other special items.
- Pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes. Label cables and
tighten transit screws. If removing screws, tape them to the objects
they are removed from.
